Drywall estimating FAQ
How many drywall sheets do I need per square foot?
Divide total wall and ceiling area by the sheet size (32 sq ft for 4x8, 48 sq ft for 4x12) and add 10 percent waste. A 12 x 12 room with 8 foot ceilings and the ceiling included is about 528 sq ft, which is 19 sheets of 4x8 at 10 percent waste.
How much joint compound per 1,000 sq ft of drywall?
Plan on about 140 pounds of ready mix compound per 1,000 square feet of board for a full three coat finish. That is roughly two 4.5 gallon buckets.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
About 32 screws per 4x8 sheet on 16 inch framing (field 12 in on centers, edges 8 in). Call it 1 screw per square foot when estimating. A 1 lb box of coarse thread screws runs about 200 screws.
How much tape per sheet?
Figure 370 feet of tape per 1,000 square feet of drywall. One 500 foot roll handles about 1,350 square feet, so most rooms need a single roll.
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 sheets?
Bigger sheets mean fewer joints to tape and a faster finish, but they are heavy and hard to carry through doorways. Use 4x12 on open commercial walls with crew and lift access; 4x8 for residential rooms and solo work.
