How many studs do I need for a wall?
Divide the wall length in inches by the spacing, then add one for the end stud. A 40 foot wall at 16 inches on center is 480 divided by 16 plus 1, which is 31 field studs before corners and openings.
How many studs are in a 10 foot wall?
Nine at 16 inches on center, six at 24 inches on center. That is field studs only, before corners and door or window framing.
How much plate material do I need?
Figure the wall length times three for a double top plate and single bottom plate. A 40 foot wall needs 120 feet of plate stock, or eight 16 foot pieces.
How many studs per opening?
Budget about three extra studs per door and four per window: king studs each side, jack or trimmer studs under the header, plus cripples above and below.
Is 16 or 24 inch on center better?
Sixteen is standard for load bearing walls and gives flatter drywall. Twenty four saves material and is common in non-load-bearing partitions and advanced framing, but needs thicker drywall or careful hanging to avoid waves.
