Paint coverage FAQ

How much does a gallon of paint cover?

Most interior paints cover 350 to 400 square feet per gallon on smooth walls. Plan on 250 to 300 square feet per gallon on textured drywall, fresh drywall, or masonry because the surface soaks up more paint.

How much paint do I need for a 12 x 12 room?

A 12 x 12 room with 8 foot ceilings has about 333 square feet of paintable wall after subtracting a door and two windows. At two coats and 350 square feet per gallon you need about 2 gallons.

Do I really need two coats?

Almost always yes. Two coats give even color and full coverage, especially over a color change or new drywall. One coat only works when repainting the same color on a wall in good shape.

When do I need primer?

Prime new drywall, patched areas, stains, glossy surfaces, and any drastic color change (especially covering dark colors). Primer covers about 200 to 300 square feet per gallon and usually needs one coat.

How many square feet does a quart of paint cover?

About 90 to 100 square feet, enough for a door and trim or a small accent wall with one coat.
